Reducing size of picture file (not picture)

I have been creating some very large picture files on my webpage. I tend to
take "megapixel" pictures as they are needed for website and publication.
Although I save them at 75 dpi for the web there is obviously a lot of svaed
information in the background. A 78kb picture is one of the "smaller" ones.
Can I reduce the files to a more manageable size?

Yes...most likely - depends on the image though.

Sorry, Jerry. URL of what? If you mean the museum's it is
www.nantwichmuseum.org.uk. But the latest poctures have not shown and I
thinkit is because we have used up all our freespace. That's why I want to
reduce the file sizes if I can. I am sure I once read about this - but it may
have been: "scan at 75dpi"! The pictures were scanned at the correct size
(about 8cm x 6cm) so there is nothing I can do to reduce the pictures.

DPI has absolutely nothing to do with the size of the file or the size of the image that
appears in the browser.

DPI "only" applies to images when printing them.

Download the free IrfanView www.irfanview.com and use it to resample the images and save
them at a 75 percent quality setting.

Tom: No I didn't optimize - but then I never have. So what happened this time?
Steve: Downloaded Irfan View (it was a later version than I had before) but
I didn't spot the 75 per cent quality setting - or anything else that might
have helped. Probably it's me!

Batch Conversion...Advanced (iirc)
