Reduce photo size in Vista?

L

Lindsay Graham

It's easy to reduce the size of a photo for sending by email, but that
always creates a new email message. It's also easy to attach the original
photo to an email message that has already been created by the user. But,
if I have already created an email, how do I reduce a photo in size and
attach it to that user-created email?

I know I could copy and paste the contents of the user-created email into
the system-created email, but I don't want to do that (eg, I want to reply
to an existing email message and retain it in the same conversation thread).

I also know that I could reduce the image size by going into Photoshop or
IrfanView etc, but is there a way I can do it from within Vista?

No 'Resize' option in my R-click menu in Photo Gallery either. Any other
ideas, Andre (or anyone else)?

Hmm must be new in Live Photo Gallery 2008 and the 2009 beta. In Vista's
Photo Gallery, the only resize option I see available is when you click
email. If you download the new version, you get additional resize features I
mentioned earlier.

You can resize a picture using Paint.

This is what makes me so mad I can spit bullets. Many of us were not born into the computer world. So why do they make such a simple thing as resizing a photo so difficult?
I have been struggling to resize photos so I can send 10 or 12 pictures and not have an 80MB email. Posting pictures on websites or online sites require downsizing. This is a common requirement. I dont care about special effects, red eye, crop, blah blah blah. Every option except RESIZE, rrrrggghhhh.
Thanks to those who answered and helped. I will try downloading the updated version of windows live for my Vista.
Thanks again for those who responded to help people like me who are computer challenged LOL

Lindsay-
I am asking the same question that you have but I do not really see the
answer to the problem of how to reduce the photo size when you want to
attach a picture to an email that is user-created? Did you ever get
another response? I am new to the Forum and not sure I am seeing all of
the responses correctly. In Outlook, when I selected "file attachment
and then chose a photo, it always asked "do you want to change the size?
I always reduced it. This option is not available on the Vista Home
premium version I have on my brand new desktop. I saw something about a
newer version of Live gallery but not sure I can download that. Please
send any fixes my way. Thanks.

ultimately, you might try
using a graphics program
like photo shop to work
on photos.

it is a good investment
especially if working with
photos is now a hobby for
you.

if I'm not mistaken there
are older versions of photo
shop still available that are
relatively inexpensive.

all the versions of photo
shop provide great tools
for working with photos
including resizing.

keep in mind however that
there are two facets of resizing
photos.

one is reducing the canvas
size and the other is reducing
the dpi.

so when you mention resizing
photos, it might very well be
that you are trying to reduce
the canvas size but the dpi
is still very high.

thus your 80 meg problem.

a good dpi for producing actual
photo graphs, like via Wal-Mart's
photo dept is between 200 and
300 dpi.

a good dpi for emailing is
around 150.

------------------

there is however alternatives
to photo shop that are freeware,

however, I'm not familiar with
them.

When you send e-mail, do you do it from an "e-mail program" or through
Internet Explorer? If you're using Windows Mail (or Windows Live Mail) then
try sending a photo by right-clicking on it, selecting Send To, and choosing
Mail Recipient. Doing it this way will actually run a wizard that gives
some basic--but extremely useful--resize options, already built into
Windows.

Open Window Photo Gallery. Right-click the photo that you wish to resize.
Click Open with and choose Paint. Resize it to your hearts content. I
suggest that you save the resized photo with a different name.

All programs are part of Windows Vista Home Premium.
