Reduce Height of TaskBar

Peter Brause

Hello,
on my PC (Windows XP Prof.) I have no problem to reduce the height of the
task bar so that all icons are in one row (just by using the mouse). On my
friends PC (Windows XP Home), the height seems to be fixed to the minimum of
3 rows, maybe, because there are about 10 icons in the right corner. Is
there a chance to change this?
TIA

It sounds as though the taskbar is locked.
Go to Control Panel --> Taskbar and Start Menu - and click the Taskbar
tab.
Uncheck "Lock the taskbar".
It should then be possible to reduce the height of the taskbar by
putting the (double-arrowed) cursor on it, and dragging.

May be his Taskbar is locked and yours isn't. Right-click a blank spot,
then click on "Unlock the Taskbar". Then see if two-headed arrow appears
with cursor on its edge. Do the usual if it does; re-post if no luck.
Someone else may have another idea.

The problem is: the taskbar is unlocked and the user can expand it until it
covers half of the screen. But he cannot minimize it to the desired size.

Some settings to check:

Display> Appearance> Advanced. In the Items scroll list, go down to Icon.
The default font size is 8. If larger than this, reduce it. It is handy to
increase this so that the text in Save and Open dialog boxes is easier to
read but it has a side effect of increasing the mount of space used in
other areas.

If no luck, use the Classic theme. Go back to Advanced and select a
Standard scheme. Once that is applied, it will (hopefully) reset all
default sizes for the various components. Then have your friend reapply
their Windows XP theme.

Another thing to check is the View settings for the Quick Launch bar. Right
click in this area and select View> Small Icons. Also check that the
boundary bar for the Quick Launch bar has not inadvertantly slipped down to
a second or third line of the taskbar.

Accessibility Options: Be sure to check that none of the visuals have been
set to large or high contrast. If it is needed, reinvoke high contrast
after the sizing problem is sorted.
