Problem

You have a Word 2000 document with pictures. The document size is is
perhaps 5 to 10 times the size of the document without pictures plus
the size of the pictures stored as for example .jpg files.

Solution

1. Open the document in Word (2000 in my case)

For each picture:

2. Select the picture, right click and choose edit picture
3. Now the edit picture window opens and you can only see the picture.
Select the picture and cut
4. Choose edit/paste special
5. Choose JPEG
6. You probably have to move the pasted picture to it's original
location
7. Close the edit picture Window and start from 2 with the next picture

When you have cut and pasted all your pictures: save and check the
document size

I have many images in many documents and have found that using paste special,
picture can help reduce file size the file size.

Best though, I use .png format, then use Insert, Picture from File.

Most originating packages will save as to .png

Beware, it does not work well on all types of images, for example if the
image has areas of the same colour these may not translate over very well.
Then paste - picture works well.

If you dont have the original file for the image, I sometimes copy from Word
to PowerPoint, size nicely, then Save As .png, Insert From File, and resize.

hope this helps, best of luck.
