Redirecting my Documents folder, any disadvantages ?

K

KRK

Hello,

I'm planning to move my Documents folder to the E: partition on my hard
disk (which is currently empty). I know how to do this, and I think I
understand the advantages, but are there any disadvantages ? (I'm not short
of space on the C: partition)

Thanks

I can not think of any reason NOT to. I have been doing just this since
Window 95 days.

I always set it up like that..

unless a system has 2 disks then I put it in the second disk
but are there any disadvantages ?

In vista yes there is. C is monitored by system restore aka shadow copies.
If you have ultimate or business edition
or even If you have home edition with a third party program you can use
what's called as 'previous versions"

But this applies to disks that are monitored only. You can change that from
the system restore settings.

You can read about all this on my blog here >
http://computerboom.blogspot.com/2008/09/restore-deleted-items-in-vista-with.html

so if you don't set windows to monitor that partition as well you cannot use
previous versions

I personally don't want to use that feature so I don't care.

The only potential disadvantage is that it can slightly slow down the
computer because it will take a little time for the heads of the drive
to move back and forth between the C: partition and the E: partition.
Chances are, though, that such a slowdown may be small enough that you
won't notice it.

I haven't noticed any disadvantages to moving the Document file.

I misread his post. However the information is valuable to others that may
be reading this thread.

The problem with decreasing space in C has been asked at least 1000 times in
this newsgroup.

Hey by the way you say that you don't have space in C

Just the opposite, bozo.

You're in such a hurry to find a reason to add a URL to your site that
you don't have the time to read what you're replying to, huh?

I'm planning to move my Documents folder to the E: partition on my hard
disk (which is currently empty). I know how to do this, ...

And how do you do it?
I didn't find an easy way for this, I had to move everything manually, which
was a lot of work, and it did'nt work out for each folder.
Ideally I want to move the whole C:\Users folder to a different disk.

Thanks, Robert

I have most of my pictures redirected to another drive.
There is no disadvantage that I can see. At least this was if there is
a serious crash your files are safe.

Unless the serious crash is on the drive with your pictures.

Backups are necessary to protect from serious crashes.

I'm sorry the instructions weren't to your liking. I'm not exactly sure, but
AFAIK you can't move the users folder in the way you describe. My article is
written simply for anyone wanting to move the My Document folder for a
single user, not multiple users.

Never mind, it's not *your* fault ;-)
Tonight I'll be going to install W7 - but I guess that it won't work there
either...

There's a way in Disk Manager to mount a disk on an empty NTFS directory.
It seems you could redirect "c:\users" to another hard disk in this way.
Then all your user directories could be on the other disk, but I haven't
figured out how to get to an empty "c:\users" yet.
