Red 'X'

When I open a spreadsheet ( created by copy pasting some
content into excel MAC 2001) on PC, it appears as empty
document with just a small box on the top with 'X' in red
inside.

Does anyone know why ?
 
Probably because the content was pasted in as a linked object and
the object was not sent to the PC.
