Red X in square

When I go to a website and click to go to another page, sometimes all I get
is a red x in a small square. Why is that? What I wanted is to download a
..pdf file, but all I got is a red x in a square. I have Adobe Reader on my
computer, so I don't know why I am having this problem.

Red X image displayed where the applet should be, applets won't run

You should download the newest Java software, available
free, from Sun Microsystems:
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Make sure to uninstall the old version of Java first.

Is it all PDFs or just specific PDFs?

If its all PDFs your security settings (ie Firewall) are preventing
Adobe Acrobat from downloading the file and displaying it so the right
click > save target as trick will get around this.

If its specific files it just means there is nothing to download - the
file has been deleted on the server or corrupted so the link is
pointing at a corrupt or missing file.

I'll described my simiilar experience and how it showed the page I wanted. I
may have been successful by accident but here goes.
I wanted to access an application form from a secured government website. I
have the latest Adobe 7.0. I also have Adobe 6.0 and thought I should give it
a try. I invoked it and and so Adobe Reader come up also. (Are Adobe 6.0
and Adobe Reader different? I also removed pop-up blocker in case that was
the problem too. It worked but I don't know why the other Adobe 7.0 wouldn't
do the job. Do you think it may be because the government server is not
updated with new Adobe 7.0?? Or some other reason?
I hope my information is proper.
Good Luck

Hi Rod,

Which version of Adobe Reader you've installed? Also, an immediate
workaround would be to enable "Disable PDF in browser" or similar option so
that the Acrobat's add-on is not used.
