Red X in place of Charts

G

Guest

I am trying to review a powerpoint sent to me by someone else. They used the
data tables inside powerpoint to create charts and graphs. All of those
charts and graphs show up as a red X in a box. When I double click, both the
graph and the data table appear, but go away when I click elsewhere. Every
slide does this (there are 57).

The file is under 500K total. I am running XP and have over 2G of memory,
with much of it free. Office 2003. I have verified that there are no
updates for windows or office available using microsoft update.

I would rather not go through all 50 slides, make the chart appear and then
capture it using snagit or something, but I need to know what is in there.
Any suggestions as to what to check?

Make sure you have all the latest service packages installed. In your help
menu, select check for updates. When you land on the microsoft site, cllick
on the gold button that reads Check for Microsoft Updates.

As noted above, I have done this and am told that "Your Office products are
up-to-date!"

FYI, this problem does not occur on my husband's computer. Both of us are
running the same version of Office 2003 with powerpoint noted as
(11.8135.8132) SP2

I tried that just now - no difference - the charts still don't show up (same
behavior).

This will sound silly, I'm sure, but have you tried rebooting and then
opening PPT straightaway? Do the charts behave then?

Thanks Echo - tried them all, to no avail.

I am going to be rebuilding this ppt with new data; can I avoid this problem
by creating my charts in excel and then capturing the image of the graph
instead of using the native functions in ppt?

That will be the most likely to resolve it, I'd guess. But since RedX can
happen with graphics, too, it could happen with them, too. I think it's
probably unlikely, though.
