Recycle bin problems

When i look in my recycle bin it shows no icons but when i click on empty
recycle bin it asks me if i want to delete the 52 items it contains, when i
confirm this it makes the noise of screwing up paper like it usually does but
when i click it again it still says there 52 items. i think this may be
something to do with some spyware or adware i accidently installed as when it
started happening loads of popups started coming up. ive tried showing hidden
files and done virus and adware scans but all havnt worked. please help

While I don't have a direct answer for you, I'm not so
sure its spyware or adware. I've recently re-installed XP
Home Edition with SP2 slipstreamed and I get, on
occasion, an empty recycle bin even though I just moved x
amount of files/directories to it. Like you, if I click
to empty the recycle bin it asks me if I want to delete
the files/folders and how many. I also get the recycle
bin sound effect when its done. However, I haven't gone
back in to check to see if the files/folders are still
there. If I dont see anything in the bin, I don't look
again, never gave it a second thought. Its not as common
as it use to be when I had SP1 and all the critical
updates. (I run Ad-Aware, Spybot, AVG Anti-Virus 2-3
times a week and I never get anything, but the usual
tracking cookies).
