recursive infinite directory can't delete it

I have winXP with fat32, I was doing some test with jboss and jbuilder,
and when i am trying to delete a tmp folder windows says that it can't
be deleted, the specified file does not exist.
Here is the problem it is a directory C:\tmp\dir1\dir1\dir1\....
it is infinite, it is like the partition is corrupted.
I have tried chkdsk /f ; /r ; deltree, reboot in dos mode, even tried
to delete it under linux, but no luck.
is there any way to repair this? or the only option is to format? :(
thank you very much

I've seen this in windows 98 se
I couldn't delete a file and scandisk claimed there was bad clucter and
would check for physical damage but would find nothing wrong and wouldn't
fix the fat entry.
Boot into safe mode and delete it.
Better yet, delete the C:\Temp folder containing the problem and create a
new one.
Then check for physical damage.

Install this program called unlocker after it is installed then right click
the file or folder and select Unlocker. If the file or folder is locked then
a window will appear with a list of processes locking the file or folder.
Select the locks and click Unlock and you are done.
http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/unlocker171.exe If that does not work then
try Killbox http://www.pcbutts1.com/downloads/killbox.zip
Both these programs have a delete on boot option, try that if the normal
options do not work.

Only download software you can validate as uncompromised - in the case
of non-vendor site you have no guarantee that the files are unmodified
or uncompromised. Anyone providing a link to a non-vendors site with a
direct download should not be trusted, the vendors sites are the safest
place to download their application.

When running these application, install them, update them, then reboot
in SAFE MODE and run them again to get even more things.

If you take nothing else from this post, remember the following:

Only download files from Trusted Sites.

You can find the vendors direct links by doing a simple GOOGLE Search.
