Recurring Script Error On Startup

K

KIR

In the last few days I started receiving a script error notice whenever I
startup or reboot my computer. I have IE6 and XP. The error reads:

Internet Explorer Script Error

Line: 357
Char: 2
Error: unspecified error
Code: 0
URL: http://t.msn.com/en-us/default.aspx

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

yes no

No matter which button I press it continues to reappear until I hit the
button 3-5 times after which it goes away until I restart or reboot. What
can I do to resolve this error, i.e., get this error to stop appearing?
Thanks

First eliminate any spyware.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each needs to be updated with the program's update function
before every use, even when just downloaded. There's also a lot more to do
than just those two programs. CWShredder is also available here:

I'm confused. First, the only spyware I have loaded is Microsoft antispyware
beta 1. It has been running flawlessly. I don't understand why it is
necessary to uninstall it. If you can explain how this software is causing
or has caused this problem I would appreciate it. Are you saying that after
I uninstall that I should not reinstall or use any spyware programs? I
believe this problem started after I tried to make a desktop shortcut for a
URL (not the URL stated in the error message). I first selected Set As
Desktop Item, when nothing happened I then selected Create Shortcut. Can
doing this have caused this error? Please continue to help. Thanks.

Hi KIR :)

What Frank is referring to is that you have some kind of infection on your
machine, a malware, hijacker, Trojan, worm or parasite that is causing the
problem, which you did not install. These are the types of nasty scumware
that your current anti-virus or anti-spyware programs are not programmed to
detect, or remove. The software you have installed is not *spyware*, that's
the bad kind. You have installed are the *anti-spyware* and anti-virus
software, that's the good kind. However, you may need other types of *anti*
software as well to find and remove any scumware you may still have on your
system. The information Frank provided for you are additional programs that
will do this.

Hope this helps

Jan :)

I ran Norton AV and MS AntiSpyware with negative results. As you suggested I
downloaded 2 Winsock repair programs. I read all that you suggested. My
machine runs normally with none of the warning signs mentioned. What else do
you suggest?

Microsoft Anti-Spyware is a beta version. That means there is work to be
done on it before it is released.

The Winsock fixes are in case removing the spyware breaks Winsock. I think
I said that.

In any case, one anti-spyware program will not catch all spyware. Go to the
site I suggested: http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
