Recovery Console (SP2)

Guest

I recently formatted my PC and did a fresh installation of XP on it. The
machine works fine now, but there is one small thing i am unable to do:
Install the Recovery Console.
The first thing i did after installing XP was to install Service Pack 2, now
i am trying to install the recovery console and i cannot. What i get is this
message:

Setup cannot continue because the version of Windows on your computer is
newer than the version on the CD.

I take it this is because of SP2, and in that case, someone undoubtably has
come up with a way to get around this. Now if someone would be kind enough
to inform me of how.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Aaron,

You are correct in assuming that it is Sp2, what you need to do is
"slipstream" sp2 into your original disk and burn a hybrid.

You can do a google search for slipstreaming but here is one such solution.

I can assure you it is easy and it works.

Hi

If you have upgraded to SP2 and you are using a CD from a previous version
of XP, you will see that error message. To install the Recovery Console in
SP2, you will need to create a slipstreamed SP2 CD.

You can download the SP2 file (266 MBs) from here:

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BE-3B8E-4F30-8245-9E368D3CDB5A&displaylang=en -
or if you have a copy of the SP2 CD, you can copy the xpsp2.exe file from
that CD onto your hard disk/partition and use that:

then follow the directions in the following article to create a slipstreamed
XP CD:

There is nothing wrong with this answer. However, there is another
simpler method to install the recovery console without having to create
a slipstreamed CD. In addition, users who have OEM versions of the OS
and only have recovery disks can not slipstream.
The alternate method is to just extract the winnt32.exe file from the
SP2 exec and replace the old version sitting in the c:\windows\i386
folder with the new one. One then just executes the recovery console
install command as described in the Microsoft literature using the run
command C:\windows\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons. You may get a prompt
that a certain upgrade file or folder could not be found. Discard the
prompt (OK out) and the installation menu will appear. You want to be
connected to the internet as the insatller will download the necessary
files from a Microsoft server.

To extract the winnnt32.exe file you need to expand the full SP2
install exec. If you have the Microsoft disk, it is called XPSP2.EXE.
Just copy it to a folder on your hard drive. At a command prompt
execute C:\Temp\XPSP2.exe -x (change the drive and folder to wherever
you installed XPSP2.exe). It will take a while, but all the XP2 files
will be copied to an i386 folder in the folder you specify. Make a
backup copy of the original winnt32.exe and then replace it with the
XP2 version.
