Recovery Console Question

I am trying to recover my system, or at least some data files before
reinstalling XP. The problem is that I can't list anything in the c:\ drive
using the DIR command, and I can't change the Recovery Console Rules. I
tried to input 'c:\>set AllowAllPaths = True' and got te following response:
'The SET command is currently disaled. The SET command is an optional
Recovery Console command that can only be enabled by using the Security
Configuration and Analysis snap-in.'

I can't find anyway to get into the Recovery Console and get the SET command
turned on so that I can try to AllowAllPaths and also enable Removable Media
so that I could then copy the files before I wipe the drive and reinstall
Windows. Any suggestions, or am I just screwed?

Also, if I'm screwed, is there any chance of recovering the data once the
drive is reformatted?

If nothing is viewable then one might suggest that the disk is screwed.

Use of DIR command should identify any files in the root directory and also
other subdirectories [or folders].

Do you get any information as to disk size and free space?

If size = free space = true disk capacity, then you know you have problems.

If any differences are shown, then either your data is in a corrupt folder
or yu have other file structures or partitions.

By the way: if you formnat the drive or partition you will loose your data
for sure.
