I have never put a password in as administrator that I can recall. I tried
what was suggested here by someone else--just hitting "enter" and proceeding.
But all I get is a C Prompt! Any way to bypass this or a master password a
techie knows that will work??? Also, the previous question before asking for
a password is which installation of Windows do I want to log on to? I only
have one--do I just put a "1" or what?

Thanks in advance for help!!!

The recovery console needs the pasword for the person who installed XP, not
for just any administrator. If the install was done by a major PC maker,
you may need to contact them for it.

However, the password is sometimes blank. So, try just pressing enter when
you are asked for a password, it may help.

Or, if you can get into XP, even safe mode, you can arrange to bypass the
password by the following registry change:

Instead, just run REGEDIT (Start à Run à Regedit)

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Setup\Recover
yConsole
Set the DWORD SecurityLevel value to 1

Thanks for your help. However, at the risk of looking totally ignorant, when
I leave password blank, and a C prompt comes up, is this what it's supposed
to do? I typed HELP and the list of commands don't help me as far as I can
tell for what to tell my pc to do to actually recover my system! Please
advise--maybe a step by step. Or is the C prompt there because I need a
password. I guess what I need to know is what happens when you get it right
(password-wise) -- what do I do next? I really don't want to have to
reformat & reinstall.

I was told I could reinstall XP (unfortunately I don't have any other
partitions to put it in), but I might lose some of my files--how great is
this risk? I really don't want to lose my "My Documents" file as I stupidly
haven't backed it up to a CD for some time. That's what I really need to save
prior to any reformatting if I have to go that route.

Thanks!
