Recovery after HD crash

I had a boot HD crash and reformatted a slave HD to make it my boot HD. I
received a message after trying to validate my Windows xp installation
saying that I used up the number of installations allowed with my original
Windows CD. - How can I get another Windows XP installation disc from
Microsoft? I don't think I should have to buy another copy retail.

Is this a legitimate request? Thank you

You don't need to buy another copy of XP since you are just doing a clean
install on a hard drive in the same computer. Use the phone option for
activation and speak to a human. It will only take a few minutes.

People's hard drives die all the time and all you need to do is tell the MS
person that your hard drive died and you only have this copy of XP
installed on one machine.

You don't need another CD. The message is badly worded (about the number of
installations.)

You can use your Product Key/License/CD as many times as you wish on the
same computer for all license types (other than possibly trial licenses) for
Windows XP...

That being said... It is not 'validation' but 'activation' and you should
just choose to 'activate by telephone' and follow the given instructions.

How to activate Windows XP by phone

To contact a Microsoft customer service representative to
activate Windows by phone, follow these steps:
1. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories,
point to System Tools, and then click Activate Windows.
Or, click the Windows Activation icon in the notification area.
2. Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service
representative to active Windows now.
3. Click Read the Windows Product Activation Privacy Statement,
click Back, and then click Next.
4. Follow the steps in the Activate Windows by phone dialog box,
and then click Next.
Note: The number appears now and differs based on the location
that you select.

5. When activation is completed and you receive the following
message, click OK.

You have successfully activated your copy of Windows.

Enjoy!

Thanks fellows for your answers. - I did make a telephone call and got
my Windows XP activated OK. The guy I spoke to (probably in China or Spain)
was kinda short tempered because I mis-typed one number he gave me and I got
an error message. He made his annoyance with me very obvious but I did get
it done OK and succeeded in getting it activated. The contact was worth it.
Thanks again.
