recovering network connections icons: can this be done?

How can I recover the network connections icons in the network connections
control panel in windows xp home edition? I have no idea what caused the
icons to disappear and the network connections wizard to become unavailable.
Is there a recovery/repair method that does not require working from command
prompts?
(The connection itself still works, apparently normally. I don't wish to
get into anything that messes the system up even more if I can help it.)

The icons are gone both from the control panel and from the taskbar.

Please have a look at the following Microsoft Knowledge Base
article. Perhaps it applies to your situation.
