Hi Friends,

I have two hard disks on my computer - one for System and
one for Data. I was re-installing Windows XP last night on
the 'System' hard disk. Somehow, I foolishly managed to
install it in the 'Data' hard disk (I did not format the
hard disk before doing this).

Needless to say, I am at my wits end as I have lost all
data and am stuck with a backup that is one month old!

Is there any way under the sun I can recover some of the
lost data? Of the 30 GB 'Data' hard disk, I am only
interested in two files of 2MB that are critical!!!

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Hi Jack,

If you did not format, the data should still be there. Look at the drive
carefully from Windows Explorer.

If you didn't format, then the data files should be there.
Does XP run a check to see if there is enough hard drive space?
Did you check if the drive letters have been switched?

Hi Rick,

I installed XP in the 'Data' hard disk. Explorer is
showing only XP related files and 28 GB of free space!!

Thanks for your quick reply

Data recovery may still be possible, depending on what
sectors have been overwritten. ActiveUneraser makes 2
products, I've used to recover both Partitions and files.
Unfortunately, they are not freeware/shareware. You may
be able to download a trial version, just to see what data
is still resident on the disk.
1. ActiveUneraser - To recover individual files
2. ActivePartiton - Recovers entire Partitions that have
been overwritten.

As Rick has said. If you DID NOT format the partition, the data IS still
there!

Hi Jack,

Sounds to me like you DID format. There is a chance some of the data may
still be recoverable, this utility can help:
