In general, using the utilities that are designed to recover files from,
say, an accidentally formatted drive is what people have tried.
Do this ASAP, and with as little activity as possible since the removals.
These utilities are not free, but some of them have a trial mode where they
will show you what they expect to be able to recover for you before you pay.
I'm afraid that I have not heard success stories from folks that have tried
this route.
