Recovering encrypted files

I have some private files which I have encrypted and I want to ensure that if
anything happens I can recover them.

I have set my main administrator account up as the recovery agent and when I
check the details of the file it states that in deed the said account so
designated.

Now the problem, when in the Main administrator account I recover the file
from a backup and try to remove the encryption I get an error message "Access
is Denied".

The main account has full conrol of the file.

Consider using the 3rd party freeware "Truecrypt" for maintaining
encrypted archives. There is no dependency on login accounts &
permissions -- simply knowing the passphrase will give you access.
Container files are easily accessed and backed up and can be read on
any W2k/XP or Linux machine that has the freeware installed.

Thanks for your suggestion I tried and will be using it.

I would still be interested if anybody can tell me how encryption recovery
works.

Thanks again, great help.

Then DO NOT encrypt them. Simple.

And even if the files will be lost due to some events it will be
possible to restore them with tools for data recovery. I got in this
sitation before and tools works, all the files gone were back after the
procedure. The tool I used is Undelete, you might give it a glance:
