recovering email from a pst file

I backed up my Outlook files to an external hard drive and ended up with pst
files. How do I convert these to Word or text files so I can open them on a
computer with out Outlook installed?

That is the normal Outlook mail storage. The backup process merely copied
the file.

With very great difficulty AFAIK.....do you have access to the original
machine still? if so the easiest way is to import the mail to either Outlook
Express (if the machine without Outlook is using Windows) or Thunderbird if
the machine is NOT using windows...
