recovering e-mails

my outlook would not open this morning. It appears to
have a bad sector on the hard drive. I managed to get
another copy of outlook up and running and have back ups
of my contacts and calendar, but how do I find where my e-
mails are stored on my hard drive. They have to be out
there somewhere... anyone know how I can find them and
get them into the new version of outlook I have running?

All mail and contacts etc contained in a pst file, which may be a hidden
file. By default in the Documents and Settings Folder group

I found three .pst files, but only one will open and it
opens as a blank e-mail. The next one will not open and
the third says the properties need to be modified.

Don't try to open it. With Outlook closed, find the "right" PST file (it
should have today's date on it) and back it up/copy it.

Assuming these are on the dying disk you need to copy to another hd, ensure
you do not overwrite any existing pst. They do not have to be in the default
location, and esure they are not read only.
If the disk is failing it may be that they are damaged, you could try
running scanpst.exe on them, perhaps several times, to see if they are
repairable.
You can only open a pst in OL, ie File/Open/Personal Folders
