Recovering Deleted Files after XP Installation

I installed Windows XP over Windows 98. There were files on the desk top which have been deleted. The folders they were in are still there under however no files are within the folders

Is it possible to recover these deleted files and if so how

Also is it possible to recover Explorer favoruites that have also gone after upgrading to XP
