Recovering data from non-boot registries

My computer died last night; in the process, it made my boot drive
mountable but not bootable. I have therefore installed XP on another
drive, and am booting from that drive. How do I recover data from the
registry on the former boot disk? I can't seem to make regedit do what I
want, i.e., to open the former registry?
