recovering data from 'access denied' folder in slave hdd

hi there, i've gone through 'repair' by booting xp cd, i've tried 'fixmbr' and 'fixboot' since the hdd which i'm trying to recover data from use to bot with grub given i had a linux hdd as master before. that hdd is now damaged, so i cannot boot from the hd i need the data from. i've tried copying partitions with a maxtor intsalation disc since both hdds are maxtor, but this only damaged the new hard drive i was using to try to recover the data with, leading me to reinstalling xp on the new hdd. my problem is that i need to recover some data from a slave hdd which will not boot under any circumstances. i am able to view some files from booting to the master hdd(new hdd), but some files are 'access denied'. are there any other utilities or tweaks i could use to fix this problem? i need to recover about 20gb of data. thank you for any pointers or sugestions.
