Recovering Active Directory

Pasq Ziota

Hello,

I have encountered a bizare situation with my SB server. I
no longer have users or computers on my server. I simply
have empty folders for users and computers in my small
business server administrator console and personal console.

Right now, the server seems to be working normal. Yet, If
I try to open active directories for users and computers.
The error message is:

"Naming information cannot be located because:
The logon attempt failed
Contact your system administrator to verify that your
domain is properly configured and is currently online"

I am afraid to restart the server for fear that I will not
be able to log back in.

Question:
Is there an active directory backup that I can run before
restarting the computer. OR, is there anything that I can
do to correct this problem.

Thank you for your help!

Regards,

Hi Matjaz,

Thank-you for your reply! I have followed the procedure in
the 3 knowledgebase documents you recommended. Everything
except the Group Policy Editor worked.

I encountered the same error when I tried to open the
Group Policy Editor. AND, users and computers are still
not visible.

It it possible that my system was hacked?

The system seems to be workingf normal, everyone can logon
to their PC, network drives are available and all systems
are functional.

I am afraid to restart the server for fear of not being
able to login without reloading everything.

We perform full system backups daily. Is it possible to
recover some files from the back-up tapes?

Thanks for your help!

Regards,

To verify that your DC and domain are ok try running dcdiag /v and netdiag
/v. You will get a detailed output of your domain status.
