Recovering a clicking failed DeskStar drive - Can anyone repair these drives?

P

Peter

My Hitachi DeskStar drive failed in the middle of nothing in
particular yesterday. It now makes a clicking sound and is
unrecognized by the BIOS. I pulled it from the PC after about a minute
of this and am very keen to get advice on anyone in the world that can
recover the data, or repair, these drives. I do have some backup but
not a recent as I should have!

Can anyone advise a data/drive recovery service with known expertise
on DeskStar clicking failures?

Ontrack has. The one time we got a quote from them we had it very
fast. But it was way too high for the worth of the data on the disk.

I suspect most data recovery otfits have experience with this problem.

Thanks, it's mostly some family photos that I am so sad to lose but I
can't justify huge prices. I will call Ontrack just in case. I had
moved these files to this drive after my latest backup.

I made a recording of the deskstar (IC35L120AVVA07-0) error in case
this is indicative of the nature of the fault:

You could try www.retrodata.co.uk

Yeah, not a great idea with new drives, thats
the most likely time they fail, when they are new.

Classic recalibration seen when the drive
cant read anything useful off the platters.

Yes, that is the one. Very characteristic. Heard it on several
DeathStars so far. BTW good recording.

Well my recovery has, so far, been unsuccessful. The diagnosis is that
it is just that the hard drive is 'unrecoverable' but I don't know if
that includes drastic measures like removing the platters and
installing into something new, if that is even possible.

Something is possible to do with your drive depends entirely on yo
how important data is on drive (to you I mean) and how far would yo
go to retrive it!!
