Attempting to repair XP Home from a CD, it froze during installation because
a file was missing. After having to power down, the power up wanted to
continue the repair, but it failed again. A look at the C drive showed no
windows file, but all others. So, not knowing better, I used diskpart to
quick format the first 10G and installed a fresh copy of XP home on a new
partition, D, after the 10G. As this is my friend's computer and do not want
to shell dough, is there a utility to recover JEGS and DOCS. I have tried
free PCRECOVERY but it only retreived to the cluster level. Is there another
utility or way of restoring the MFT backup (?), or something, to restore the
directory? THANKS!!

you did a format and you expect to be able to recover files ?

try some un-delete or recovery software, if that is not sucsesful,
then I guess your format actually did a good job of formatting !

sorry friend, prepare for the worst

rgds,
Edwin.

Recovering files from a formatted drive is quite simple and easy. There
are a multitude of file recovery utilities which can do that or that are
claimed as being capable of doing it. The problem is not in finding a
utility to do it, it's choosing which one of the hundreds that you will
find doing a simple search. These should do the trick:
