Inaccessible Account Folder -> Can't Recover Files

This started a few months ago (don't recall exactly) when suddenly my
computer crashed for no aparent reason without any kind of error, the
computer simply reset, this leading to a starting error due to some file
missing.
After that I went to a friend to try and recover some files I held on my
desktop. Booted his computer up, which offered to scandisk only my nonwin
partition (i had 2 partitions, a 4GB win one (C), the rest (D) used for
everything else). After scaning, we entered win and after I accesed my win
partition when I was letf numb, Documents and Settings was inaccesible, and
the Windows dir was empty except for the uninstall directories for updates,
the only folder seemingly untouched was program files, which I didn't use
anyway since i stored all programs and gases on my nonwin partition. Strange
thing was, even tough windows was "gone" the partition's space seemed to be
at the same level it was before the crash.
After this I returned home and instaled win on another hdd, tried
recovering with a software program, but what it didn't make much sense to me,
and the files i was after located on my main user's desktop (this is the
actual reason for this post) we're nowhere to be found so i gave up.
After a few weeks i accidentaly stumbled on my old win partition and saw
that the missing files and folders in the windows directory somehow reapeared
and that i could acces documents and settings altough my curent windows said
that my old main user's account folder was empty and inaccessible. After this
i tried booting my old windows but this error came up "windows could not
start because of the following file is missing or corrupt:
\windows\system32\config\system" with advice of reparing (the system file is
there so that means it's probably corrupt).
I left it alone for some time while i backedup everything on my nonwin
partition in preparation for formating and reinstaling everything on my main
hdd. But i still don't want to give up on those files, once i format they're
lost forever, so I ask:

Is there any chance i can actually recover those files? I'm "afraid" of
using repair because wouldn't it overwrite their location on the hdd? is
there any hope for this or should I just format and put it all behind me?

Status at crash: WinXP Pro SP2 updated daily, no known virus infection or
spyware present, it was probably hardware failure.

p.s.: sorry for the long post, but i tried to give as much detail as i could
to what happened.

From a working XP installation, see if taking ownership of your
old files provides access. Take a look here for the procedure:

How to take ownership of a file or folder in Windows XP

Good luck

it did, i actually found this article before posting but i was afraid it
would only do more damage since the folder was "empty", but that was not the
case.

problem solved, i still wonder what happened with the disappearing and then
reapearing windows files and folders, anyway thank you very much for your help
