Recover Excel save file

I inadvertently hit save instead of save as and thus lost
my earlier version of my file. Is there a way to recover
the -1 generation of this spreadsheet?

Probably not. You could try an undelete program such as the one that's part of
Norton Utiltiies, but you need to do that ASAP, before you save many new files
to the hard disk. Before buying it, I would see if there's any information on
the Symantec web site on this issue.

I can tell you that Undelete, from Executive Software can *not* recover files
deleted this way.
