When I want to record something from an external device
(such as a Mini Disc recorder) to my computer, I use the
Microphone port for line in recording. (It will not work
with the Line In port.) With the Micophone port it works
properly, but I cannot hear sound from the Mini Disc
recorder through the computer speakers as it's
recording. Is there any way to hear sound as I'm
recording?

Try opening the volume control. Somewhere there should be a volume control for microphones. By default, the mute function is turned on. Turn it off and try the recording again. Hope this helps!
