recording sound

i want to add a audio "welcome" to my frontpage 2003 site.

I know (obviously) that I need to buy a microphone to
record my message.

But is there a cool freeware or shareware program that
anyone knows about that records and manipulates the sound
in interesting ways that would create a file that could
then be used on my web.

what file format do folks recommend for the final sound
product?

thanks,
jelly

Sure, it's right in Windows and it's called Sound Recorder.
Start >Programs > Accessories > Entertainment ( Multimedia in some versions ) > Sound Recorder.

suggestion: if you insist on doing this, don't have it start
automatically - just put a link there for people to start it if they
want to hear it...

Try doing a google search. I'm sure someone out there already has such a file ready-made.

you sound card should come with bundled software for this purpose - .e.g.
Soundblaster. comes with 'basic' editors/wave creators and so on.

Its the same principle for Flash introductions; a link for "skip intro" should be
provided for those that do not
want to wait 25 minutes for the thing to download first.

Or try using the Windows Sound Recorder, which comes with every installation
of Windows.

Please don't. I know it's fun to play around with colors, and flashing
letters, and wacky graphics, but it make a site horribly annoying and
you'll end up chasing away visitor.

The best advice I've ever heard for designing a website is to ask
yourself "What would Amazon do?" Would amazon put a sound file that
is jammed down the throat of a potential customer? No way.
