Recording from a turntable

I have a recording program that in the past worked fine. Now, I tried it and
hve a problem.I have a line running from my phonograph to my computer mic.
When I put a record on, I can hear it through my computer speakers, but when
I press record, the computer goes dark and restarts. When it comes back up,
it sais that ithas recovered from a serious error.I tried this with both my
recording program, and the sound recorder that came with the computer. I can
record CD's for example on to the computer, and have no problem with playback
of items already on the computer.
All of the sounds are working, except fr this recent problem.

If you are feeding the PC with both a Line In input and and mic input,
perhaps that's your problem.
I have recorded from vinyls many times just using the stereo Line In input
from the turntable and listening to the PC's speakers while recording, but I
can't imaging a mic being involved at the same time. Or do you mean you
are using the mic to record the sound from your phonograph's speakers? What
software are you using?

Jim.

Thank you fr your reply. I am using the aux. out on the reciever to the mic plug on the front of my computer. I have also tried the mic in on the rear panel of the computer. Thisis a setup that worked great fr me for a couple of years, until recently.
I am using the DAK Wave Editor, but also tried with with the recorder that
cae with the computer. All of the sund works everywhere that itsgould, except
now when I press the record butoon on either program, the computer shuts down.

The HEADPHONE output from the deck should go into LINE IN socket. not the
mike socket. This is probably what you did before, but dis-remembered (and
was it on the same pc as now?).

The CRASH is probably because of overload into the mike socket - XP is
pretty good at protecting itself ! I also copy vinyl from a deck .....via a
dedicated program which edits out the hiss and scratches, there are several
on the market.
Hope this helps Silvabod
