hi is there a way of say having a list of records, and having a text box on
the list noting how many records are related to that one;

eg a list of products
product name; product number; qty

but then has a text box noting the number of materials related to the
product (if each material has its own record)

What you want to do can be done. However, you would need to do this in a
form, not in a table. You would use the DCount function to get the counts
from the associated tables for any current product.
