Argh. I meant to say I've downloaded the *nVidia* codec and run the
installation program. Argh again.

and run the installation program. But

Have you removed the ATI DVD player software? If not try that.

Well that's very interesting. And the more I think about it, the less it
seems likely that the problem I'm seeing is a result of Macrovision. Why
bother to encrypt a set top box's output? Why not just disable it, as
you've experienced? I'm going to play around some more with different
drivers and file players. I'll keep you posted. Thanks.

Hi Bill, and thanks for posting back. The firewire issue has become somewhat
moot for me at this time, given that my cable provider has no STBs with the
firewire ports enabled (I have verified this with a few different boxes). I
haven't really had the time to consider other possibilities with the other
ports available on my current STB, but the STB I currently have is a dual
tuner DVR that can store approximately 60 hours of video. Eventually, I hope
to analogously record via s-video or component inputs to a Navis Pro card,
which outputs very high quality DVD compliant mpeg2 files. That'll have to
do for now.

As for your playback issues, you may get some help from the AV forum, to
which I posted a link in my first response to this thread. Here is another
link to the HTPC forum (same site), which would be appropriate for the
playback issues you are experiencing. You may not even have to post, as your
issue may already be addressed. Good luck!
