Recommended nvidia driver?

Hi. Did a fresh Windows XP SP1 installation on a machine with an
nVidia Geforce 4 Ti4200 graphics card.

Installed the most recent nVidia driver (56.72). The system would
occasionally spontaneously reboot during the boot process (after the
Win XP splash).

I then updated using Windows update, and now experience that after the
"Windows XP Pro" splash, the system hangs on the black screen that
comes before the "Welcome" splash. At other times, the system will
boot up, but at a low resolution and the nVidia settings icon will not
be present in the process line (icons in the bottom right). Sometimes
the system comes up and works fine.

Any tips for stabilizing this system? I've used the card fine in the
same box on an older Windows XP, only I used the original driver
shipped with the card - I'm afraid that I cannot find that, but I've
downloaded the new driver from the producers (Palit) website.

Any tips greatly appreciated,

Thanks.

Morten

The nVidia drivers are always to be used. They are more up to date and more
stable than the ones MS placed in Windows Update.

Also, update your chipset drivers.

I had trouble after using the download from Windows Update site.
It installs automatically and Nvidia says the old drivers should be
uninstalled (through Add/Remove Programs) before the new ones are installed.
So I went to the Nvidia site and downloaded the new drivers but didn't
install them until I had uninstalled the old.
No more blue screen errors.
