Recommendations on cool hard drive

Why would you avoid Seagates?

They basically get too warm for my taste and I dont like the way
they have a rubber mat over the metal and logic, that means that
they can only get rid of heat by conduction to the drive bay stack.

Thats not quite so bad now with the Barracuda V, but they
still have a metal cover over the logic card, with a foam layer
between that and the ics etc. Not my idea of good engineering.

And you void the warranty if you take it off too.
It is my impression they are very quiet

They've just got louder now that Seagate had a massive brain fart on
purported patent infringement with AAM and took the silly way out of
just disabling that so it runs in noisy mode whether you like it or not.
and very reliable

Just replaced one that developed some bad sectors
in a coupla months. Installed by someone else.
- at least as of a year or so ago. Have things changed with Seagate?

Not significantly except with that AAM terminal stupidity.

OK - so what is the quietest 7200 drive around now? I was
counting on the Barracouda V but this doesn't sound so
good.

Dunno, that story is rather complicated because you cant just measure
the sound level, some sounds are more irritating than others.

Its still pretty quiet, just not as quiet as the Barra IV. Just installed
a V a couple of days ago. That was in an Athlon system that isnt
very quiet because its got a rather noisy case fan as well as the
standard AMD box fan which isnt that quiet either. I should have put
it in the quiet Celeron system I put the Samsung in, but didnt think to.

Also installed a Samsung P80 and its very quiet too.

The Samsungs are available in Canada and reading reviews at least one was
supplied by Samsung Canada. If memory serves I think I can recall reading
that they (Samsung Canada) had something to do with the design of the P80
range as well. Worth chasing up if a cool running quiet drive is the goal.
