RECOMMEND: Hi-End Screensaver

I have built a beast of a machine and spent every penny I had. So, when it
goes into screensaver mode, I still want to be able to see ow much it kicks
butt. You know what I mean?

So, can someone recommend a totally over-the-top screensaver that will show
off Vista and a serious amount of hardware?

Thanks!
Scott

A "high end" screen saver could shorten the life of your computer and will
definitely cause your computer to use more energy. Vista has some great
sleep features (which currently don't always work with some drivers) that
are designed to reduce energy use and thus pollution. Running a screen saver
that prevents this will cause your CPU to heat up, shortening it's life, and
add to the overall energy use unnecessarily. I know it looks cool but really
what does it do other than that?

Give me a break!
He wants a link to a high-end screensaver, not your personal agenda to
save the universe.

The guy already spent all his money on this monster. You think he actually
cares about burning up the CPU one week earlier or the 10 pounds of carbon
dioxide he'll contribute to the atmosphere using a screensaver.

He'll have this thing replaced in less than two years. Where do you think
the trash will go?

Try answering the question.

Hopefully to some young kid that doesn't have a computer, doesn't know a
thing about them, but wants to learn everything about them. :) I always like
helping the kids out.

As for saving the earth: Sure, using sleep mode works... But, I run my CPU's
at 100% all day on every core. Folding@Home, looking for cures for some
common diseases. Check out team 33 at www.hardfolding.com :). It also has a
cool looking screensaver option. Not the prettiest thing (although the
Playstation 3 version looks awesome!), but when people see it, you get to
explain it all and get them running it, too. BTW: that's team 33... (Yeah, a
little team pimpage, there!)

Power saving is a good thing, too, and I try to do my part. But, my
computers are working for a worthy cause, too. I use flouresant (sp) bulbs,
turn off lights, low volume toilet, etc. etc.... And I support the wind
farms in the area (good part about living in a flat place with lots of
wind), which is weird as my Dad works at a coal fired plant.

this is exactly what i was going to suggest.

as you have built a very nice machine why not put it to some good use. goto
http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ download the boinc software and signup to some
projects - free of course - and donate your spare pc power/usage.

it runs some ok(ish) screensavers. i like the Einstein at home personally.

of course its your choice.

A pc left on for a year would cause over 1,000 lbs of carbon to be pumped
into the atmosphere. There are many companies recycling computers now. In
many parts of the world recycling electronics is the law. They are not
allowed in the landfill.

You're right this is not really the proper forum for this discussion but it
is food for thought. If we all turned off our computers when not in use how
much energy would be saved? I'll leave it at that.
