Recoloring a special paste link from excel in powerpoint

I have a file that was created in PP97/2003 and I was able to re-color the
fonts/borders/etc of the objects I linked in it. How I did this was I copied
a range of cells in Excel and then "paste special" them into powerpoint as a
linked worksheet object. Then I resized the object to fit where I needed it
to be. After that I would left click on the object and use the recolor
function in 97/2003 and change all the colors to the required colors.

Now when I open this file in PP2007, update the links, and try to recolor
the object I can't. The recolor button that I had to search all over for and
then had to add to the quick access ribbon (can't figure out how to add the
toolbar it is in yet) is greyed out and not accessible to recolor the object.
I tried using the theme colors but that only changes everything outside the
object.

Anyone know how I can accomplish in PP2007 now?

Does no one know what I am talking about with this? If anyone does know how
to recolor the linked excel object please help.

That recolor option doesn't exist in PPT 2007.

I know, I know, don't shoot the messenger.
