Recently Used Files List

Nicole King

In Word, from the File dropdown menu, you can view the
recently used files list (it will list the last 4 or so
documents viewed). I recently deleted a few files from my
computer, and I don't want them appearing on my recently
used files list since the file no longer exists. How can I
edit the recently viewed files list (more specifically,
how can I remove files from the list, if there is a way?)
Thanks!

I don't know where the list is stored, but a quick way to
clear the list is to go to Tools>Options>General and
change the Recently Used File list number to 0. Click OK.
Check your File menu and there shouldn't be anything
listed. Then go right back into Tools>Options>General and
set the number back to whatever you want.

I usually try to access the file and when it is not found
it is removed from the list.

Press Ctrl+Alt+Hyphen. This will turn the mouse pointer to a big minus sign.
Click on the menu item you want to remove (*any* menu item, so be careful!).

For *individual* files - Suzanne's suggestion will do the trick. For *all*
files see Elizabeth's reply. For an automated version of the latter see
http://www.gmayor.dsl.pipex.com/clear_recently_used_file_list.htm
You could add the Work menu to your toolbar for regularly accessed
documents, from which only Suzanne's method will remove file names.
