I cannot check the view recently used docs. it is greyed out.

If you used TweakUI or a registry hack to turn off the display of recent
documents in the Windows Start menu, that also affects the list in Word.
You'll have to undo the tweak.

This can happen if you're using MS TweakUI or
a 3rd party registry 'tweaker' or 'security' package.
