"receiving 55 messages" only 36 in inbox

When receiving email the counter at the bottom of the screen said that 55
messages were being downloaded but only 36 appeared in my inbox, where have
the remainder of the messages gone?, they're not in my spam folder.
 
First do an Advanced Find over your entire mailbox or personal folders file
to make sure they didn't end up in other folders somehow. (Or, if you're
using Outlook 2003, you can use the Unread Messages search folder to find
anything that is still marked as unread). Also check your rules to see if
any of them might be moving new messages to other folders.
