Rebuild a W2k server DC...

I’m about to rebuild my primary DC running W2k Server (replacing hard drives
and need to rebuilt the containers). So far this has been the only sever
running as the primary DC, Exchange, DNS, DHCP and File & Print server but we
have now outgrown that configuration. I have added a secondary DC that will
take over some of the roles. Once rebuilt the old server will remain the
primary DC and I’m looking for some good step by step how to… or best
practice documentation on this issue. I would also appreciate some feedback
on possible pitfalls or possible problems in doing so and/or better options.

My plan is to setup the secondary DC as the Exchange server move all the
email accounts to the new box (Note! I have BackOffice Server 2000 so I can
use up to three servers in my environment with the licensing I have), backup
the data from the file server, then replace the hardware, reinstall it and
bring it back online as the primary DC again.

I’m slightly worried about the authentication of clients part and all the
roles the server performs as the master DC at this point.

Any thoughts?

Note! The documentation I have found is all on upgrading from W2k to W3k… or
how to rebuild a box using disaster recovery – I do not want to do disaster
recovery since I’ll rebuilt the box to a slightly different configuration.

Thanks,

I don't see a mention of the global catalog or of DNS.

Both DC's need to have the GC and DNS server [either as secondary to the
primary or AD intregrated].

Use the GUI to xfer the roles to the 2nd DC
I would then remove the server from AD since with a rebuild/reinstall it
will be a new sid/guid

Joshua,

Thanks for the info. I forgot to mention the GC and the DNS. I was planning
to keep the DNS and the GC on the old box once rebuilt, but it doesn't really
matter if I move it to the second box, which would solve a few issues in the
setup.

Any good step by step documentation on the topic?
