Rebooting to MS DOS

HI,

Can anyone tell me how to reboot into MS DOS so it
doesn't open windows XP. I have a file I can't erase
while in windows becasue it says it is in use but it's
not so I thought I'd try it the old fashioned way.

Did you try Safe Mode yet? That would be my first choice. Otherwise, you
can press the F8 key when your computer is booting and you should be given
an option to boot to DOS. But if you just want to erase the file using DOS,
you can boot to Windows, go to Start > Run > Type in 'cmd' (no quotes) > OK
and this will open a DOS prompt.

Wrong, what OS are you talking about as there is no dos in XP.
There are two command line emulators in XP, one is the 32bit
with long file name support "cmd.com" and a 16bit "command.com"

this will open a DOS prompt

ok, let's get particular. For the sake of what this guy was trying to do,
he is essentially opening a DOS prompt (i.e. similar commands, look and
functionality).

The CMD box is not true DOS. If it is in use by windows,
the command window will not delete it either. You either
have to start in safe mode, or command line mode, by
pressing the F8 key. If this does not work, you could
create a boot floppy, and use it to start your machine.
Because all the files that are in use will be from the
floppy, you should be able to delete any file on your hard
disk.

Unlike Windows 9X, there is no "old fashioned way." Windows XP is
not built on DOS, and it's not possible to boot into DOS from it.

The only way to boot to DOS is from a DOS diskette. But if your
hard drive is NTFS, it will then be invisible.

You can't.

There is no way to reboot a WinXP PC into Real Mode DOS unless
you've set up a dual-boot system. The WinNT family of 32-bit
graphical operating systems, of which WinXP is the latest generation,
has never used or included MS-DOS. The closest they have is the
Command Prompt window.

WinXP, like its predecessors WinNT & Win2K, is a pure 32-bit GUI
OS, and does not include or "ride upon" any version of DOS, as did
Win3.x & Win9x/Me. WinXP does include a command-line emulator for
those times when GUI applets are unnecessary/redundant, but it cannot
be started in "DOS mode."
