rebooting for no reason

hello :D
a friend of mine is having a problem with his comp rebooting for no reason
,he thought it was software based prob ,so he wanted to try a reinstall of
xp. i think it might be hardware based and told him to have power supply
checked out(had same prob on my old comp). so i did a reinstall for him but
same thing comp runs good for a bit then it reboots. it varies time wise to
when it acts up.
his comp spec's are p4 3.0ghz ,1 gig ram win xp home with sp2.
any help would be great :D and thanks for helping if you can have a good
day :D

Open Control Panel - System - Advanced and click in the Settings
button in the Startup and Recovery (bottom) section. In the Startup
and Recovery window click on the checkbox for "Automatically restart"
to clear it then click on Apply and OK as needed to exit.

That should put an end to the spontaneous reboots. However they may
be replaced by a Blue Screen Of Death STOP error message. If this
does happen then the contents of the STOP message, including the STOP
code, all 4 parameters, and any file or module names mentioned will be
a direct clue as to the underlying cause of the error. Post that
information back here if you need assistance with this.

tried it and still same thing and no blue screen or error mesg at all just
plain reboot without reason :(
 
Hello Matrix,

Can you tell me when does the reboot happens ?
Is it while computer is starting or is it doing that when you/your
friend is at desktop ?
Does that happen while using a particular application ?
Does it come with any errors before the computer shuts down ?

If you can answer above mentioned questions, I can give you Sure Shot
answer which can definately resolve the reboot issue.

What you describe does seem to point toward the power supply. I had
the same issue, except my power supply was a pretty good one. But I
added too many drives and it would make a click noise that sounded like
it wanted to turn off, so as to warn me.

I found two things. My 500W pwr sup was powering 2 optical drives,
zipDrive, floppy and 4 Hard drives, not to mention the Mobo with one
12V rail. Also there was a massive heat building up in the case. My
solution for now was, I disconnected 2 Hd drives and mounted a 8" fan
on the inside of the rear back panel of the desk unit (where my PC is
encased).

The clicking stopped and all was normal again. Of course I bought a
new REXUS 500W Pwr sup but with 2 12V rails, faster cooling, silent
power and better ventilation due to its larger built in fan. However,
your friends problem is with hardware. My advise, don't waste time on
checking the power sup, just buy a good one. Read up on them first.
I am running WINXP on a Asus Intel 2.4G Mobo.

I had the same problem at my PC, I found that when I press "\" key then
it shutdowns/reboots. Hardware was ok, PS was in good condition, PC was
not heating up....... Thanks God, finally I get rid of this problem
last night and found a number of spyware/malware in it. I use "Prevx1"
software to fix the problem. Prevx1 trial version gives you one month
period to detect and clean all kind of spyware/malware.....after expiry
of one month trial period...it will only detect and informs you about
problems. At least trial version can help you to fix your problem for
the moment.

it would reboot anytime it felt like with no error mesg at all. but am
telling my friend just to buy a new power supply .he prob has to much
running off the one that came with comp.

i'd like to thank everyone for the info that was given . have a great

Hi, just had same problem, so I backtracked and remembered, my pc (winxphome
sp2) was working ok, downloaded "trojan hunter-free trial", for a look-see,
and sometime later, pc began to shutdown / reboot (stop note, driver problem)
without my prompt, so I removed "trojan hunter" and now pc runs ok. So your
problem may be the last program you downloaded before problem began,
conflicting with another program, or it may have a driver that your pc will
not accept and it closes down to protect itself. After removal through
"add-remove" I did a complete clear out with "ccleaner" - "cleanup" -
"regscrubxp", now all ok, no problems. I also run, kaspersky AV 6.0,
ad-aware, advanced spyware, spybot, windows defender, spyware blaster,
mailwasher, microsoft baseline security, startup inspector, HDD health,
connection keeper, and win-patrol-scotty, plus microsoft/windows
auto-updates.

Apart from my AV, all the rest are FREE DOWNLOADS.

Look upon your PC investment as a castle under siege and put a "ring defence
around it!"
