Reboot without reason - but no virus?

Hi!

I really hope you can help me with this one. Lately (last
week) my computer has been rebooting automatically, every
30-60 minutes or so. There are no error messages displayed,
it all just goes black. I use both AV and firewall software
(Norton/Symantec), both frequently updated. Because some
viruses can shut down AV software, I contacted Symantec to
see if they knew any viruses that could do this to my
computer. The technician there said it couldn't be a virus,
at least not a virus that they knew of (it was not Sasser,
since I could still update the virus definitions and I
could still access the Symantec website and so on). The
only problem that I see is the reboot. Also it has become
more frequent, today I had a reboot after just 15-20
minutes. I'm afraid that in the end it won't even start
before it begins to reboot. I've checked the computer for
viruses, both with my AV software and with Symantec's
online check. I've scanned it for spyware, it didn't find
much (and I deleted what was found). I haven't done
anything strange or unusual with my computer for a long
time, and also it was quite recently reset when I
reinstalled Windows XP (prof.) two months ago.

Does anyone have any idea what this could be all about? If
so, please reply, you could email me too.

Thank you.

A thought might be that your machine is overheating. You could have a dodgy
fan that might need replacing. So once your processor reaches its max temp
it resets your machine. Ive seen this before. Its also possibly that your
power supply may be faulty. Check all your connections on the motherboard.
But my instinct would be your machine overheating.

Go to control panel --system--advanced tab and change the error recovery
procedure. IE. Do not reboot on error. This will give you the oportunity to
investigate the error. When the error occurs, don't forget to look in the
event log.

Ok, I'll try that. It is not the same as the "shutdown -a"
command, I hope, because that didn't work. Where can I find
the event log?

Control panel--administrative tools.

PC Rebooting

Just thought I'd suggest checking or trying new memory, I had the same problem recently and it turned out to be a stick of memory had went bad. Don't know if you found the answer already but anything is worth a try. Kinda new at this so take it easy on me everyone. lol.
