Reassigning IDE Designations (or do I need to?)

J

Jim H.

I purchased a 300GB SATA HDD to replace my old 40GB HDD.

I just disconnected the cables to the 40G, connected the cables to the SATA
and did a clean load of Win XP. Everything went fine until I look at BIOS
Setup. The SATA is the "Third IDE Master", my DVD is the "Primary IDE Slave"
and the entry for Primary IDE Master says "Not Detected" (because it's still
disconnected).

Is it ok to leave it like this or do I somehow need to make the SATA HDD the
Primary IDE Master? I don't know how to do this since the SATA drive has no
jumpers for making such an assignment.

Don't worry about it; it's not a problem, and you cannot change it.

This settings are not done within XP but must be set up in the PC's
BIOS/CMOS. You must tell the BIOS/CMOS the booting sequence.
Currently it seems that your BIOS/CMOS is set for the IDEs to preceed
the SATA.
