I have a large number of .jpg file in a folder. I want to change their
relative place in the folder. Is their a way to do this in XP without
having them renamed to fit the name ordering? Thanks for any advise.
Go to View on the Menu bar. There are loads of ways you can display them.
You can arrange icons by Name, Size, Type, Modified.
Names are sorted in a character order.
0, 1, 2, ..., 9, a, b, c,.., z
Files can be numbered but the numbering should be at the front of the name
and these should be prefaced by leading zeros - so that the numbering is of
, say 5 digits eg
00001 File name
00002 File name
00nnn File name
Sub-folders are more user-friendly but it all depends whether it is just for
personal use - or it is a scheme that is to be agreed across an office or
organisation. If it is just simply for personal use then you can use what
you prefer whereas if it is for wider office use this needs to be some
agreed (possibly industry) standard or classification.
Where I used to work we prefaced the files with their date of creation
(YYMMDD) eg
060813 for the 13 August.
So 060813 Data on bed-stays in hospital.
You can use your own coding. Of course, important files can be listed in a
spreadsheet and they can be described and their full reference can be given
so that it can be located.
