Real-to-MP3

I'd like to convert 1-hour radio programs from Real streams into MP3
files on-the-fly while downloading. I'm using Media Player Classic with
the Real Alternative codec set for normal rendition.

Logically, the elegant way to do this conversion is by grabbing the Real
stream after it's been converted into pure audio, and then
re-compressing it into MP3. In fact, I know of no other way to do this.

I recall that we've discussed this before, and there've been one or two
solutions. Now, I need to do it and I can't find or remember. Please
accept my apologies.

Note to the un-initiated: Real's technology is deliberately designed to
prevent saving or modifying the stream. But since it must be converted
into plain sound in order to make it audible, that's the logical point
at which to grab the thing and have one's way with it.

I use Audacity to capture the stream into a "Project" file and then
export as a MP3. A program that captures as MP3 is HarddiskOgg. I have
used it also. Audacity allows me to trim some of the excess out if I
don't start and stop on time.
