Ready for the critics

Lawrence Beyer

I finally am on the web with my two sites,
and ready for criticism, and let me know if
any browsers have problems (I only have IE).
I used FP 2003 because I am totally
ignorant of how to build a website. I built
them for selling signs, (my retail signs are
something nearly everybody can use at
some time). I did not build them to get
praises about design. I am a faithful reader
here, but about 90% of the posts are over
my head. I built the sites the best I could,
hoping they would look half decent in all
browsers. From what I read, the fancier you
get, the more knowledgeable you have to be
to make it look good in all browsers on all
computers.
Everybody please take a look at:

It's quite obvious that you didn't build them for praise but I don't think
this chat/help group is the right place for you to get the help you need.
You would do better to join a website optimization group. IMHO you've been
wasting your time as I couldn't see even basic information on size or
material used and if I was after signs I would sign off and find another
site that actually wanted to take my money there and then along with my
order. Take a long, long look at your competitors websites and pick the best
points from each of them and then try again. Sorry but you did ask for me to
take a look. Fred

I don't think it's quite as bad as all that. The link to wholesale goes
nowhere. And I would think you need more photos of signs that you have made.

Stick to one font for body text.

Lose the capitalization of text.

Some links are goofy...click on Wholesale and you go to another page with the buttons reversed (?) Navigation is strange as a result.

You have pages named: new_page1.htm etc...you need to rename the pages to something meaningful

While you're at it remove the spaces from file and folder names (they'll appear as %20)...also stick to lowercase and no illegal characters.

There's no way home (or out) from within any of the photo albums.

On your order page...if you're gonna play dumb about trademark infrigement...don't mention the fact that you can't show something but you'll make it anyway! I'd re-do the order page..it's pixelated.

All your graphics are done with WordArt - VML is only well viewed in IE browsers others may not view them at all or render a low quality gif in their stead. You should use .jpg or .gifs - in your case .gifs would be best but you should create them in an image editor program...not with FP's wordart.

Design is important if you want to hold the viewer's attention, a bad design will turn the viewer away rather quickly.

Good start, just need some tweaking.

Thank you for the constructive criticism.

I am confused about this spaces (%20). Will you
please give me an example, and how to correct it.

What illegal characters did I use?

This I don't understand at all. I bought a digital
camera to take all those pictures of my signs.
They were all saved in jpg. I downloaded and
used JAlbum because it was recommended
here. All I did was follow instructions. Now you
are telling me that I shouldn't have used it
because all my graphics are WordArt. I have
seen JAlbum recommended here, but I haven't
seen any posts saying not to use it because it
creates WordArt. Please enlighten me.

I am not ignorant (dumb means unable to speak)
of trademark laws. It is illegal to use trademarks
in advertising, or manufacture trademark items
to sell, without authorization. It is not illegal for a
person to use a trademark name, or have it used,
on an item for personal use, which will not be sold.
They are very common at football games. All those
items, that fans display with their team name,
which they made, or had made, are legal if they
were made for personal use and not for resale.

Again, thanks for the constructive criticism. I will
be making changes.

a file or folder named: jim bob's personal page.htm
will translate as jim%20bob's%20personal%20page.htm
this will trip up linux/unix servers and some browsers, plus the ' is an illegal character.

none, i was just warning you.

JAlbum does not produce WordArt, FP does - if you use Draw, or Text Boxes etc.
JAlbum will just create an album out of whatever you input. I highly recommend JAlbum. I do not recommend using WordArt, Text Boxes, Autoshapes or any of the other cute drawing tools in FP.

Dumb was the correct usage in this case, as I was not accusing you of being ignorant.
That's right if you are not selling those signs you may not be infringing...it's just confusing seeing such a statement on an "order" form which kinda implies that you are selling something.

Glad to help.

Maybe it's just me but I prefer not to see bold text used exclusively.
It would be better to use normal font weight and keep bold for
emphasis.

The same applies to upper case on a page. Lower case is easier to
read, so I'd keep upper case for headers only.
