Read Receipts

Does anyone know how Read Receipts get sent to email
originators even though their read receipt service is NOT
activated? Even more interesting is that the read
receipts are ONLY generated when one particular
individual reads their emails, even though the email is
sent to a distribution list.

For example, email is sent to a distribution list that
contains over 12 email addresses. When the email is read
by this particular person in the distribution list, the
originator receives a receipt, but only for that
particular person. No other read receipts is generated
from the other members of the distribution list. Keep in
mind that the originator does not have the read receipt
service activated for the email.

The short answer is maybe they do not want to send a read
response. This feature can be individually set in the
options area under Tools/options/preferences/e-mail
options/tracking options - check box "Ask me before
sending response" - or turn it off completely.

Also, the read reciept is actually a small e-mail message
sent from the recipient back to you. Persons who download
their e-mail and go offline wind up with an outbox full of
these read reciepts to be sent back. They can also be
deleted there.

That one individual has configured his or her mail to always send read
receipts.
